Our kitchen is led by Master Chef of Great Britain, Steven Pidgeon leads and is supported by a talented and enthusiastic young team. Steve is a true Devonian having lived and worked in the county all of his life. His restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for 20 years continuously and he is one of only 80 Master Chefs of Great Britain.
He began training at Exeter College when he left school in 1992. He was in the first class to begin a course which involved NVQ training. Whilst at college Steve had work experience in a gastro pub just outside of Exeter. His previous ambition had been to become a police officer, but as they didn't accept applicants until the age of 18 Steve decided to train as a Chef instead.
It was during Steve’s time at the gastro pub that his true passion for food and cooking was ignited. He continued his training and gained his first position in The Imperial Hotel in Torquay which at the time was a 5 star hotel. Steve stayed there for a year and a half before relocating and began his long association with The Arundell Arms Hotel.
His talents were soon recognised at the Arundell and he swiftly moved up the ranks to his current position of Head Chef.
Nearly every restaurant claims to use only the finest quality produce which is sourced from local suppliers. But in the case of the Arundell this is undoubtedly true. Not only does Steve have a wealth of fresh local produce at his disposal from the kitchen garden, from home-grown strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and currants to elder-flower, fennel, spinach leaves and shallots, he will also will cook guests’ catch or game and have it ready for them for dinner. Steve has gained an excellent reputation both locally and nationally for creating outstanding modern British cuisine.
Steve says: “We are so fortunate to live and work in this wonderful part of the world. I particularly enjoy preparing our local game and fish which is something our customers enjoy. We have recently restored our own kitchen garden and it’s wonderful picking the very freshest of herbs and vegetables just yards from our kitchen door, just when we need it, and not a moment more!"
